Parent Education and Guidance

An understanding of how parents teach, guide and influence children and adolescents as well as the changing nature, dynamics and needs of the parent/child relationship across the lifespan.

Raising a child is no easy task, and every parent has their fair share of struggles. All parents have a different parenting style and this varies not only from family to family but also each child in the same family can have a different style the parent uses. Because there are so many different ways that a parent can discipline and teach their children, parent education can be very complex. Not all forms of discipline work for every child and so parent education is crucial to getting all of the knowledge that you possibly can. Parent education teaches parents about child development, and how they can apply what they learn to teach their children.

I feel their could be much more parent education when it comes to sexuality. It is an uncomfortable talk to have so many times parents avoid the conversation all together, or leave it for someone else to do. This can be very detrimental because kids need to learn this stuff, and having someone they may look up to be the one to teach them can be very beneficial.

Reflection

I don't have any material that is directly related to this content area. After I take Working with Parents I will definitely have more to put. With that being said though, I do feel a lot of my course work discussed working with families, and with that comes working with parents.

As I mentioned previously every parent has a different parenting style, so when working with parents you have to take that into account.  Educating parents on the different parenting styles, and the effects they have on kids can be very beneficial. Since I am interested in human sexuality I could also teach parents how to talk to their kids about that topic. I would be interested in working with an age group out side of adolescents if it were to help benefit them in some way.
