Hello!

My name is Taylor Inglis and I am graduating Kansas State University with a BS in Family Studies and Human Services! I started my freshman year as a Math Education major. I found that I wasn’t enjoying it as much as I would have hoped, but I knew I wanted to stay in Education. I talked with a friend that I had made in my dorm hall, and she introduced me to Family and Consumer Science Education. I felt that I would really enjoy teaching kids about basic life skills. So starting second semester of my Freshman year I was now in the college of Human Ecology, and it introduced me to a variety of classes I would have never taken in my old major, and I was really, really liking it. Through the next 4 semesters I came to realize that the classes I loved the most weren’t the cooking classes, and design classes, but the ones focused on the family, relationships, and human development. I found myself intrigued to learn more about those things, rather than the things I was supposed to be teaching my future classes! Many of my classes I shared with Family Studies and Human Service majors so I looked into it a little to see if that was more up my ally; and sure enough I made an appointment for a major change, again.  At this point I was a Junior changing my major, and this had my parents looking at me like a was crazy. But as a stated before a lot of the classes I had already taken went towards my new major, and all of my education classes counted as my mandatory elective credits so it was a very easy change! I would love to get a job working with troubled youth, because though I switched out of Education I would still like to work with kids outside of a school setting. I am thinking about getting a Masters in Youth Development and possibly trying to teach at the college level!

PROFESSIONAL PHILOSOPHY

Growing up I had a great family life. I grew up with three siblings, and even though we all live in different states we are still close. My family makes the effort to see each other regularly even though my parents live in Michigan, my older sister lives in Indiana, my older brother lives in North Carolina, and my sister and I live in Kansas. My family has always made me feel loved and cared for, and I can only wish that kind of love and support for everyone. I’m going into the field because I want to help families become what I had growing up. I know what it takes based on my experience, as well as my education in this field at Kansas State. This major gives me many different career options.

My strongest FLE areas are Human Sexuality, Human Growth and Development across the Lifespan. I'm very interested in youth development and behavior, and educating adolescents on sexuality. Most of the people I talk to never had a great sexual education class, or didn't have sexual education at all, and I think it is very important for future generations to actually get educated. I have a history in education so I want to be able to use what I have learned, and the experience teaching to help adolescents understand what they are going through at a very important time in their lives. I also feel it is important they learn healthy sex practices, as well as the repercussions if they aren't safe

I am currently thinking about getting a masters in Youth Development, and trying to teach at a college level as well. I would like to educate youth, but I am also interested in teaching at the college level because I find that to be a really awesome age as well. Sometimes students aren't getting sexual education until college, so I would love to be a part of that as well.
