FSHS 300- Independent Study on Sexual Violence- I took this class because the topic really interests me, because as a female college student statistics say I have a 20%-25% chance of being sexually assaulted while attending University. I wanted to be knowledgeable in the topic so that I can help others who are going through it, as well as myself.

I wrote a research paper about sexual violence in the LGBTQ community with an emphasis on transgender individuals that can be read here.

FSHS 506- Middle Childhood and Adolescents: A major part of this class was learning about the development adolescents go through. We worked on different case studies where we had to describe why a teen should not be tried as an adult. The first one was about a 16 year old and why they should not be tried as an adult, and my reasoning had to do with the developmental changes they are going through. You can read this document here.

Human sexuality encompasses many different aspects of development. There are biological, social, cognitive, and emotional factors that come into play. Human sexuality can refer to ones sexual orientation, as well as sexual activity.

I want to work with adolescents, and help educate them on safe sexual practices, as well as educating them on the consequences that come along with becoming active too early. Not only do you physically need to be mature for sexual activity, but it is very important to be mentally ready as well. Right now the average age of first sexual intercourse is 11. As parents, family professionals, and a society we should be concerned about this, because when you become sexually active too early, and when you are not mature enough it can result in STI’s, unplanned pregnancies, and emotional and physical problems.
Reflection
Human sexuality is something that fascinates me, and I hope to be able to study it more if I move on to grad school at some point. I love learning about sexual discovery, sexuality, gender roles, and sexual reproduction. As I have stated many times before I hope to one day be able to teach this subject to adolescents, but I would also want to teach it at a college level as well. I think it would be fun to teach adults because some of them may have never had a good education on the subject before.

I hope to use the information I have learned to help the LGBTQ community as well. There is a stigma against how they are able to do things, and I hope to educate more people and hopefully change some people's point of view.

In my future career, whatever that is going to be, I hope to be able to educate people that human sexuality isn't taboo to talk about, and that we should all be open about things relating to the topic.
